Mamidikaya Pappu / Raw Mango Dal

Mamidikaya pappu or Raw Mango Dal is a special dish of andhra. As this is a seasonal dish, i suggest you to try it when sour mangoes are available. I have used only moong dal, but toor dal and moong dal in equal quantities can also be used.

Different Dishes

In andhra many dishes are prepared raw mango, my personal favourite is this dal. A chutney can also be made by combining raw mango and fresh coconut. Soon that recipe would be available. Rasam, flavoured rice and many more are prepared with these mangoes. We can make it a bit spicy also as the tanginess dominates the dal generally. Always the consistency can be adjusted by adding some water if dal gets thicker in later time.

Instructions
  1. Take a kadai and add 2 tsp of oil to it. As it gets hot, add mustard seeds. Once they crackle, add jeera, green chillies , curry leaves. Saute for 2-3 minutes and add chopped mango pieces.

  2. As mango pieces turn softer , add salt, turmeric and mix gently.

  3. Pressure cook dal till it turns mushy (4-5 whistles would work).

  4. Now check for tenderness of mango pieces ,if they are cooked completely. Then add cooked dal to it and water as required. let it cook for 5 minutes and switch off flame. Mamidikaya pappu is ready to be served. Mamidikaya pappu along with a spoon of ghee in steaming hot rice is best way to enjoy.
